We are a new partnership, but have already held several events and activities. Visits have included a tour of the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, followed by a talk on its acoustics from Dr Jonathan Hargreaves of Salford University. Sixty students from five schools have been on a two-day visit to the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) symposium at the Rutherford Appleton Labs, Harwell, and students from three of these have now undertaken a further half day’s training from Dr Laura Thomas of the CERN@school project to find out how to use Medipix data in research; with a detector on loan to our schools there are promising projects on the way.
Our most recent planning meeting had a practical focus, with a lab of apparatus to discuss, and we are planning to follow this with a technicians’ meeting. Future events are to include a Medical Physics evening in May for GCSE students, a car challenge for Year 9 and a repeat of the Year 8 ‘Plugging into your Future’ day at Manchester University, where we invited students from each class in partnership schools to work on practical challenges with STEM ambassadors from industry. We might even have the official launch evening which was postponed from September!
