The partnership provides a strong and supportive network for science co-ordinators which is valued so much that they have set up a similar model for supporting literacy. Highlights of the past year have included our annual Science Factor competition which sets new standards of excellence in science communication every year, and an amazing Family Learning Night ‘Room with a Boom’ with Nick Barker from Warwick University. Keith Gibbs’ practical session was very well received by Years 4 & 5 and Dr Louisa Preston, UK Space Agency Aurora Research Fellow based at Birkbeck, University of London led a fascinating gifted & talented session as part of the STARS project for Year 5 & 6 pupils. This was combined with a creative writing session led by the English department.
We were delighted that Dr Michael Foale, former NASA Astronaut came to open our new STAR Centre (which has a brand new Phiz Lab) and gave a talk to children from all of our partnership schools in the day plus some of their families in the evening. The children (and their teachers!) were inspired and excited to listen and talk to a real astronaut who has flown the Space Shuttle, commanded the ISS and saved the Russian Space Station from spiralling out of orbit.
